There are a variety of opportunities for volunteers
to become involved in ministry at the First
Presbyterian Church of Elko. These include
Lay Readers
Lay Readers read the designated Scripture
passages during worship services. They tell the
congregation on what pages the passages may be found
in the pew Bibles, and they ask the congregation to
stand for the Gospel readings. At the end their
readings, they close their portion of the worship
service by saying, "The Word of the Lord," to which
the congregation responds by saying, "Thanks be to
God!"
Lay Ministry
Members of the church family are occasionally
invited to deliver the sermon or lead other portions
of Sunday services, usually when the Pastor is
unavailable to fill the pulpit.
Teaching Ministry
There are a variety of Sunday School teaching
positions available, including leadership of
Children's Church. Vacation Bible School and Summer
Arts Camp offer additional opportunities to share
your gifts with the youth of our church and
community. If there is already a leader assigned to
a particular group or activity, he or she would
usually welcome help. If you enjoy working with
children or youth, or you would like to become
involved in a leadership role for adult learning
sessions of any kind that would interest our church
family, you are encouraged to contact Julie Blessing
at jblessing@frontiernet.net, 738-3430, or 753-8529
Youth Ministry
The First Presbyterian Church of Elko has several
youth groups that depend on adults for leadership
and supervision of their activities. These include :
- Kids' Club (K-Fifth Grades)
- Junior High Youth
- Senior High Youth
- Boy Scouts
If you enjoy working with youth, leading or
helping lead one or more of these groups might
provide an outlet for your talents.
Music Ministry
If you like to sing and can carry a tune, the
Choir would welcome you to
its ranks. If you sing or play an instrument, the
congregation would welcome the sharing of your
musical gifts during Sunday worship,
particularly during the summer months when the choir
is inactive. The Christian
Minstrels would also be happy to have additional
musicians or singers.
Pianists and organ players are always encouraged
to step forward to help provide music during worship
services.
If you would like to lead or help lead any of the
church's music groups, such as the Choir, Youth
Choir, Kid's Choir, or Jazz Band, the opportunity is
open.
If your musical talents lie in the realm of
recording or digitizing music, there are many ways
to use these talents in the church's music ministry.
Stephen Ministry
Training and leadership opportunities are
available in the church's Stephen Ministry program.
